Don’t Follow Your Passion!

If you’re a 20 or 30 something trying to figure out your career path (unless you get clear green lights from the world that you’re a prodigy early on in your life) DON’T follow your passion!
Instead spend your 20’s & 30’s experimenting to figure out your strongest natural talents & skills that companies will pay a lot for in a space where there is a high employment rate.
Follow that path & land a role at a strong company (not necessarily a sexy one) and commit to mastery of those skills.
And spend time on your passions (whether that’s being a DJ or artist, entrepreneur, etc) on the weekends.
What you’ll find is that as you master that high paying skillset at a solid company you’ll start to experience the camaraderie, prestige, and joy that comes with mastery and, regardless of how you felt when you started out down the path, it will BECOME your passion.
You’ll also find yourself well equipped financially to fund all of your creative outlets and the life experiences that are important to you.
On my personal journey, although I didn’t realize it until the past few years, this is exactly what happened for me with tech sales.
My dream was to be a pro baseball player as a kid and as I finished up high school I was good enough to probably play college ball at a D2 school.
But I took an honest look in the mirror and recognized I wasn’t tracking to play at the professional level (let alone at the minor league level where you don't make all that much...).
I made a life altering decision to shift my focus to go pro in something other than sports & landed on tech sales as a path where I could get paid to express my love for people & where the competitive edge, internal motivation, & work ethic that made me successful in sports was highly valued.
To be honest, when I started out in tech sales it wasn’t immediately my passion.
But, after making 6 figures after only one year in & getting a small taste of financial freedom, experiencing the healthy pride of putting in work & succeeding, & experiencing the joy of new friendships & personal & professional development I was HOOKED.
10 years later, having worked at Oracle, Google, & now at a startup (which has been the most exciting leg of my career journey yet) I'm able to use this career as a vehicle to supporting my passions like having a Youtube channel & podcast, having fun life experiences, & as an amplifier of my entrepreneurial dreams.
Tech sales isn’t for everyone but, for the people whose natural passion & talents align, it’s a path they can leverage to support a life of freedom, impact, and self expression.
